Personal stories

Lacey's emergency arrival

"I was so scared going into the neonatal unit that knew I nothing about, where people I had never met were looking after our baby girl. I had no idea what all the cords and tubes were for or what the machine beeping meant. The journey that we had through the NICU was tough and stressful"

A Christchurch night out for Neonatal

On January 10 2018, my sister in law Shannon had a routine midwife appointment which luckily my brother Daniel was home for due to his work being rained off. At this appointment the midwife raised serious concerns for Shannons wellbeing and the possibility she was suffering from preeclampsia. Shannon was rushed to hospital . . .

Our story - 12 years on

We noticed that there were other babies in the same room, except they were tiny. Our "wee" boy looked huge!  The nurses advised that they did not have any nappies that would fit him, or hats or booties. Man did we feel like we were in the wrong place!

Neonatal November 2018

In 2017 we launched 'Neonatal November'.  One of the key drivers for this was to have a wider period of time to raise awarness of neonatal journeys.  In addition, we were conscious that there are many 'non-premature' neonatal journeys each year (ie the full-term babies with health issues and/or complications) and we wanted to widen beyond World Prematurity Day on November 17th.

Harrison 21 years later

I learnt not to expect or compare his journey to that of any other full-term baby. He did everything in his own time.

Chelsea - Our little miracle

After 4 years and 3 rounds of IVF we were lucky to finally get pregnant.  I had a very eventful pregnancy with multiple stays in hospital for hyperemesis gravidarum.

Jason's unexpected beginning

Every parent hopes for a smooth entrance into this world for their little ones and while most get that dream, I'm so glad we have such a wonderful unit filled with amazing people to give help when our little ones need it.

Harrison's love for water helps overcome challenges

Harrison and his dad David, go swimming every Wednesday and Harrison loves to splish and splash and dunk under the water.  Water Babies have been awesome and it's been really great for his confidence.   We really feel like his strength and co-ordination have come a long way since beginning these classes.

Eliza - A full term journey

"We were in shock. Sickness hadn’t even been on our radar and we had never even considered that we’d be admitted to NICU. Eliza was full term—even more than full term—and we thought only premature babies were treated in NICU"
